** Update: 10/6/19: I am currently closed to queries as I catch up on submissions and requested materials. I hope to reopen to queries in 4-6 weeks.**
Across the board, I’m looking for books that hook me from the very first page, whether it’s the writing, the voice or some unquantifiable draw that demands my time. I’m drawn to stories that are exceptionally well-written, that star dynamic, unforgettable characters and that appeal to a wide, commercial audience.
I’m looking for literary fiction with commercial appeal and beautiful, stand-out writing (The Girls, Cloud Atlas, Circe). I’m on the lookout for upmarket general, women’s and historical fiction my book club will want to spend hours talking about (Big Little Lies, The Nest, Orphan Train, Little Fires Everywhere). I want books that inform and entertain, and that take me to unexpected places (Crazy Rich Asians).
I’m on the lookout for well-done romantic comedy – think Bridget Jones for Millennials, with a voice that feels new and current – and I have a weakness for fun, glitzy, perfectly-executed and utterly-addictive beach reads.
I’m also looking for well-written romance, both contemporary and historical. Some of my favorite novels are epic and genre-bending (Outlander, The Bronze Horseman), and I never say never when it comes to paranormal, although believability and originality are essential.
For young adult fiction, I’m especially drawn to high-concept projects with blockbuster potential. I’m also on the lookout for heartfelt stories about teens dealing with current issues related to social media, mental health, romance, and finding your own unique identity that feel fresh and relevant.
Genres I read less of but will still consider include psychologically complex horror (I'm a huge fan of Stephen King) and female-centric thrillers. In these categories, I’m looking for select projects with storytelling that won’t let go.
For nonfiction, I'm seeking exceptionally engaging narrative nonfiction and memoir with outstanding writing.
In all of the above, humor is always welcome and if I laugh out loud and/or cry three times, you've probably won me over.
Please note: I do not represent middle grade, picture books, graphic novels or poetry.
I am actively building my client list and am open to submissions.
Please send a query letter and the first ten pages in the body of the email to: email@example.com
As a new agent with space on my list, I'm looking to develop long-term relationships with the authors I represent and will advise and advocate for my clients every step of the way. As an experienced editor, I'm an editorial agent and typically work with authors through several rounds of revisions before submitting to publishers.
If I request your full manuscript, I’ll do my best to get back to you within twelve weeks.
My tastes are varied and I'm always hoping to be hooked by originality, great writing and engaging storytelling. A few things I would love to see in my inbox:
Contemporary fiction/romance revolving around a current social issue
Literary fiction that walks the commercial line with an original, distinctive voice
Fun, debauched romcoms set in Manhattan penthouses, luxury yachts, Beverly Hills mansions and/or Hollywood film sets
Beautifully-written family sagas
Coming-of-age stories, friendship stories, sibling stories
Well-observed social commentary weaved seamlessly into compelling storytelling
Books about Appalachia
American road trips
Stories set in New Orleans with a Gothic, atmospheric feel
YA adventure/romance with outstanding world-building starring mermaids or vampires, with a fresh twist
Well-written romance of all subgenres
This is an eclectic selection of the kinds of books I love to read and would love to represent. I'm seeking books like these:
I'm also looking for romance at the top of its game, in all subgenres. I want fun escapism that sweeps me away with its writing, its immersive storytelling, its humor and heart and, most of all, with its characters. I want heroes and heroines I can fall in love with and chemistry that leaps off the page. Some of my favorite romance novels are those that break out of their genre in wonderful and unexpected ways.
